2 Chronicles 36: Let him go up

Read 2 Chronicles 36:1-23 before you meet.

In a few lines

2 Chronicles gives its own reason for the fall: the LORD sent messengers "because he had compassion on his people" (36:15), and they mocked them "until there was no remedy" (36:16). The same Hebrew verb says the Chaldean king "had no compassion" (36:17). And the book doesn't end in the ashes: its last words are "let him go up" (36:23).

The verse to carry

“The LORD, the God of their fathers, sent to them by his messengers, rising up early and sending, because he had compassion on his people and on his dwelling place;”

2 Chronicles 36:15

To talk about

  1. 1. The LORD sent messengers to his people, "rising up early and sending, because he had compassion" on them (36:15). Who has God used to warn you or call you back, and how did you receive it?

  2. 2. Zedekiah "didn’t humble himself" and "hardened his heart against turning to the LORD" (36:12-13). What makes it hard for you to humble yourself and turn, and what has helped you do it?

  3. 3. After the house was burned (36:19), 2 Chronicles ends with "let him go up" (36:23). Where do you need a fresh start after a loss, and what would a first step toward it look like this week?
