2 Chronicles 12: They have humbled themselves

Read 2 Chronicles 12:1-16 before you meet.

In a few lines

In Hebrew, the verb that says Rehoboam's kingdom "was established" (12:1) is the verb of "he didn’t set his heart to seek the LORD" (12:14): the kingdom was established, the heart was not set. And the LORD's word answered Judah with its own verb: they had forsaken him, so he left them to Shishak (12:1, 12:5).

The verse to carry

“When he humbled himself, the LORD’s wrath turned from him, so as not to destroy him altogether. Moreover, there were good things found in Judah.”

2 Chronicles 12:12

To talk about

  1. 1. Rehoboam abandoned the LORD's law when his kingdom "was established and he was strong" (12:1), not when life was hard. Why can good seasons pull us away from God? What helps you stay close when things are going well?

  2. 2. When the LORD's word came through Shemaiah, the princes and the king humbled themselves and said, "The LORD is righteous" (12:6). What makes it hard to say God is right when he corrects us? When have you said it?

  3. 3. The chapter's verdict on Rehoboam names his heart: he "didn’t set his heart to seek the LORD" (12:14). What would setting your heart to seek the LORD look like on an ordinary day this week?
