1 Timothy 2: Petitions, prayers, intercessions
Read 1 Timothy 2:1-15 before you meet.
In a few lines
1 Timothy 2 asks first for "petitions, prayers, intercessions, and givings of thanks" (2:1), and says, "For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior" (2:3). And the godliness of 2:2 and the godliness of 2:10 are two different Greek nouns.
The verse to carry
“I exhort therefore, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and givings of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in high places, that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and reverence.”
1 Timothy 2:1-2
To talk about
1. The letter sets "givings of thanks" beside "petitions, prayers, intercessions" (2:1). Why might thanks belong in the same breath as asking?
2. The letter speaks of a life "in all godliness and reverence" (2:2). What might that look like on an ordinary day for you?
3. After asking for prayers (2:1-2), the letter says, "For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior" (2:3). How might that change the way you pray for others?
