1 Samuel 20: The kindness of the LORD
Read 1 Samuel 20:1-42 before you meet.
In a few lines
Jonathan asked David for "the loving kindness of the LORD" (20:14), for his house forever (20:15). At Saul's table David's place was empty (20:25); years later David told Jonathan's son, "I will surely show you kindness for Jonathan your father’s sake" and "You will eat bread at my table continually" (2 Samuel 9:7). In Hebrew both kindnesses are chesed.
The verse to carry
“Jonathan said to David, “Go in peace, because we have both sworn in the LORD’s name, saying, ‘The LORD is between me and you, and between my offspring and your offspring, forever.’” He arose and departed; and Jonathan went into the city.”
1 Samuel 20:42
To talk about
1. David asked, "What have I done?" (20:1), and Jonathan answered, "Far from it; you will not die" (20:2). When has someone you trusted turned out to be wrong about a person, and how did you find out?
2. Jonathan asked David to keep kindness with his house "forever" (20:15), and years later David did (2 Samuel 9:7). What promise have you kept a long time, or had kept for you?
3. Jonathan spoke for his friend at his father's table and paid for it (20:32-34). When have you had to speak up for someone when it cost you something?
