1 Samuel 19: Without a cause
Read 1 Samuel 19:1-24 before you meet.
In a few lines
Saul swore by the LORD that David would live (19:6), then reached for his spear again (19:10). Jonathan's "without a cause" (19:5) is chinnam in Hebrew, the word of the Psalms' "Those who hate me without a cause" (Psalm 69:4). Jesus said those words were fulfilled in the hatred he met: "They hated me without a cause" (John 15:25).
The verse to carry
“Jonathan spoke good of David to Saul his father, and said to him, “Don’t let the king sin against his servant, against David; because he has not sinned against you, and because his works have been very good toward you;”
1 Samuel 19:4
To talk about
1. "Jonathan spoke good of David to Saul his father" (19:4), when it cost him to do it. Who might need you to speak up for them this week, when they aren't in the room?
2. David went to Samuel and "told him all that Saul had done to him" (19:18). Who is your Samuel, someone you can tell everything to, and what makes them safe?
3. Saul swore, "As the LORD lives, he shall not be put to death" (19:6), and a few verses later reached for his spear (19:10). Where do you find it hard to keep a good promise once the moment has passed?
