1 Samuel 17: The battle is the LORD's

Read 1 Samuel 17:1-58 before you meet.

In a few lines

The WEB's champion in 17:4 is in Hebrew the man of the benayim, which Brown-Driver-Briggs gives as the space between two armies. Goliath, the man of that in-between space, defied the armies of Israel (17:10). David called them the armies of the living God (17:26), and came in the name of the LORD of Armies (17:45).

The verse to carry

“and that all this assembly may know that the LORD doesn’t save with sword and spear; for the battle is the LORD’s, and he will give you into our hand.”

1 Samuel 17:47

To talk about

  1. 1. For forty days Goliath came out "morning and evening" (17:16), and Israel "were dismayed and greatly afraid" (17:11). What has been standing in front of you so long that you've stopped expecting it to move?

  2. 2. David remembered what the LORD had already done: "The LORD, who delivered me out of the paw of the lion and out of the paw of the bear, will deliver me" (17:37). What has God already carried you through that you need to remember this week?

  3. 3. David wanted the day to show something about God: "that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel" (17:46). In something you're facing, what would it look like for the outcome to point to God rather than to you?
