1 Samuel 14: By many or by few
Read 1 Samuel 14:1-52 before you meet.
In a few lines
Saul's oath put a curse on eating (14:24), and the lot took his son, who never heard it (14:27, 14:42). The people refused to let him die: "he has worked with God today!" (14:45). In Hebrew, "rescued" (14:45) is padah, the verb the Law uses for redeeming the firstborn (Exodus 13:13).
The verse to carry
“Jonathan said to the young man who bore his armor, “Come! Let’s go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised. It may be that the LORD will work for us, for there is no restraint on the LORD to save by many or by few.””
1 Samuel 14:6
To talk about
1. Jonathan said, "It may be that the LORD will work for us" (14:6), without knowing how it would turn out. When have you stepped out in trust like that, and what happened?
2. Jonathan said of his father's oath, "My father has troubled the land" (14:29). Have you ever made a rule or a promise that turned out harder on others than you meant it to be?
3. The people spoke up for Jonathan: "Far from it!" (14:45). When has someone spoken up for you, or when might you need to speak up for someone else?
