1 Kings 9: My eyes and my heart

Read 1 Kings 9:1-28 before you meet.

In a few lines

1 Kings 11 counts this second appearing: the LORD "had appeared to him twice" (11:9) and "had commanded him" not to "go after other gods" (11:10). And the words passers-by will say, "Why has the LORD done this to this land" (9:8), are word for word in Hebrew the question Moses foretold in Deuteronomy 29:24.

The verse to carry

“The LORD said to him, “I have heard your prayer and your supplication that you have made before me. I have made this house holy, which you have built, to put my name there forever; and my eyes and my heart shall be there perpetually.”

1 Kings 9:3

To talk about

  1. 1. The LORD answered Solomon's prayer with more than he asked: "my eyes and my heart shall be there perpetually" (9:3). Where do you most need to know this week that God's eyes and heart are on you, and why there?

  2. 2. The LORD asked Solomon to walk "in integrity of heart and in uprightness" (9:4). In which part of your life is walking in integrity hardest right now, and what would one step toward it look like?

  3. 3. Hiram had given freely, and when he saw the cities he said, "What cities are these which you have given me, my brother?" (9:13). When have you given someone less than they had given you, or been given less? What did it do to the friendship?
