1 Kings 8: Hear in heaven

Read 1 Kings 8:1-66 before you meet.

In a few lines

Solomon calls the house "a place for you to dwell in forever" (8:13), then calls heaven "your dwelling place" (8:39) in the same two Hebrew words. And the verb of "heaven … can’t contain you" (8:27) comes back at the end: the bronze altar was "too little to receive" the offerings (8:64).

The verse to carry

“Blessed be the LORD, who has given rest to his people Israel, according to all that he promised. There has not failed one word of all his good promise, which he promised by Moses his servant.”

1 Kings 8:56

To talk about

  1. 1. Solomon said even heaven "can’t contain" God (8:27), and still asked him to hear prayers made toward one house (8:28-30). What helps you believe that a God that great hears you?

  2. 2. Solomon's prayer expects people to sin, "for there is no man who doesn’t sin" (8:46), and gives them words to come back with: "We have sinned" (8:47). What makes those words hard to say, to God or to someone else, and what helps?

  3. 3. "There has not failed one word of all his good promise" (8:56). Which of God's promises have you seen kept, in your life or in the Bible, and which one are you still waiting on?
