1 Kings 4: Like the sand by the sea
Read 1 Kings 4:1-34 before you meet.
In a few lines
The sand of the LORD's promise to Abraham (Genesis 22:17) is in this chapter twice, as a picture: for the people (4:20), and for the king's "breadth of mind like the sand that is on the seashore" (4:29), in the promise's own Hebrew words. And Jesus said, "even Solomon in all his glory was not dressed like one of these" (Matthew 6:29).
The verse to carry
“God gave Solomon abundant wisdom, understanding, and breadth of mind like the sand that is on the seashore.”
1 Kings 4:29
To talk about
1. Each officer made provision "for a month in the year" (4:7), and "They let nothing be lacking" (4:27). Where do you have a share in providing for others, and what would "nothing lacking" look like there?
2. "Judah and Israel lived safely, every man under his vine and under his fig tree" (4:25). What would living safely look like for you right now, and what gets in the way?
3. Solomon had wisdom from God (4:29) and a table full every day (4:22-23), yet Jesus said "even Solomon in all his glory was not dressed like one of these" (Matthew 6:29). What are you anxious about that Jesus' words speak to?
