1 Kings 2: The way of all the earth

Read 1 Kings 2:1-46 before you meet.

In a few lines

David's last charge, "You be strong" and keep what "is written in the law of Moses, that you may prosper" (2:2-3), echoes in Hebrew the LORD's charge to Joshua (Joshua 1:7). And the chapter's last line, "The kingdom was established" (2:46), uses the two words of Nathan's promise, "I will establish his kingdom" (2 Samuel 7:12).

The verse to carry

“and keep the instruction of the LORD your God, to walk in his ways, to keep his statutes, his commandments, his ordinances, and his testimonies, according to that which is written in the law of Moses, that you may prosper in all that you do and wherever you turn yourself.”

1 Kings 2:3

To talk about

  1. 1. David told Solomon, "You be strong therefore, and show yourself a man" (2:2), and then, "keep the instruction of the LORD your God, to walk in his ways" (2:3). Where do you need strength this week, not to get your own way, but to keep the LORD's?

  2. 2. At the end of his life David remembered Barzillai's family, who came to him when he fled (2:7; 2 Samuel 17:27-29). Who showed you kindness in a hard time, and how could you honour it this week?

  3. 3. Shimei said, "What you say is good" (2:38), and three years later he went out anyway (2:39-40). Where is a promise you made easier to agree to than to keep?
