1 Kings 18: The God who answers
Read 1 Kings 18:1-46 before you meet.
In a few lines
In Hebrew the people "waver" (18:21) and Baal's prophets "leaped" about the altar (18:26) with the same verb, one Brown-Driver-Briggs gives as "limp". And the verb answer comes eight times in the chapter, from the people who "didn’t say a word" (18:21) to Elijah's "Hear me, LORD, hear me" (18:37), which in Hebrew is answer me.
The verse to carry
“Elijah came near to all the people, and said, “How long will you waver between the two sides? If the LORD is God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him.” The people didn’t say a word.”
1 Kings 18:21
To talk about
1. "How long will you waver between the two sides?" (18:21). Where do you find yourself trying to stand between two sides, and what would it look like to follow the LORD there this week?
2. Obadiah was "over the household" of Ahab, and he "feared the LORD greatly" (18:3-4). Where do you live or work among people who don't share your faith, and what does fearing the LORD look like for you there?
3. The servant looked and said, "There is nothing", and Elijah told him, "Go again" seven times (18:43), until he saw "a small cloud, like a man’s hand" (18:44). When have you kept asking God while you saw nothing, and what kept you going?
