1 Kings 17: Your son lives

Read 1 Kings 17:1-24 before you meet.

In a few lines

The LORD "commanded" ravens to feed Elijah (17:4), and then a widow in Zarephath, "which belongs to Sidon" (17:9). Jesus himself named her: of all the widows in Israel, "Elijah was sent to none of them, except to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon" (Luke 4:26).

The verse to carry

“The woman said to Elijah, “Now I know that you are a man of God, and that the LORD’s word in your mouth is truth.””

1 Kings 17:24

To talk about

  1. 1. The widow had "only a handful of meal in a jar and a little oil in a jar" (17:12), and she made Elijah's cake first (17:13-15). Where is it hardest for you to give from what little you have?

  2. 2. When her son fell sick, the widow said hard words to Elijah (17:18), and he took the whole matter to the LORD in prayer (17:20-21). What do you do with questions and hard words when something goes wrong?

  3. 3. Jesus said Elijah was sent to none of the many widows in Israel, but to a widow in the land of Sidon (Luke 4:25-26). Who might God be sending you to that you wouldn't have expected?
