1 Kings 16: Out of the dust

Read 1 Kings 16:1-34 before you meet.

In a few lines

The LORD's word to Baasha opens with almost the words he had sent to Jeroboam (14:7): "I exalted you… and made you prince over my people Israel" (16:2), and Baasha's house fell as Jeroboam's had (16:12). And when Hiel built Jericho, it was "according to the LORD’s word, which he spoke by Joshua the son of Nun" (16:34).

The verse to carry

“Because I exalted you out of the dust and made you prince over my people Israel, and you have walked in the way of Jeroboam and have made my people Israel to sin, to provoke me to anger with their sins,”

1 Kings 16:2

To talk about

  1. 1. The LORD's word against Baasha began, "I exalted you out of the dust" (16:2), yet Baasha had "walked in the way of Jeroboam" (16:2). What has God lifted you out of, and what helps you not slide back into the old ways?

  2. 2. Ahab went further "as if it had been a light thing" to walk in the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat (16:31). What wrong things are easiest for you to treat as light, and what helps you take them seriously?

  3. 3. Joshua's word about Jericho (Joshua 6:26) was kept in Ahab's days (16:34). What does it mean to you that God's word doesn't wear out with time?
