1 Kings 15: A lamp in Jerusalem

Read 1 Kings 15:1-34 before you meet.

In a few lines

The Hebrew word for the lamp the LORD gave Abijam "for David’s sake" (15:4), nir, comes only four times in the Hebrew Bible, each time of the lamp for David (11:36; 2 Kings 8:19; 2 Chronicles 21:7). And each of the three times 1 Kings 15 says "made Israel to sin", the sin is Jeroboam's (15:26, 15:30, 15:34).

The verse to carry

“But the high places were not taken away. Nevertheless the heart of Asa was perfect with the LORD all his days.”

1 Kings 15:14

To talk about

  1. 1. Asa "removed Maacah his mother from being queen, because she had made an abominable image for an Asherah" (15:13). When has following the LORD asked something hard of you with someone close to you, and what helped you do it?

  2. 2. "But the high places were not taken away. Nevertheless the heart of Asa was perfect with the LORD all his days" (15:14). Is there something in your life you've left standing? What does it mean to you that the LORD weighs the heart?

  3. 3. When Baasha built Ramah against him, Asa sent the treasures of the LORD's house to Ben Hadad (15:17-19). When you're under pressure, where do you turn first for help, and what would turning to the LORD first look like this week?
