1 Kings 11: His heart turned away
Read 1 Kings 11:1-43 before you meet.
In a few lines
The verb of "Solomon loved the LORD" (3:3) is the verb of "King Solomon loved many foreign women" (11:1), and the verb of his blessing, that the LORD "may incline our hearts to him" (8:58), is the verb of "his wives turned away his heart" (11:4). Even then the LORD kept one tribe "that David my servant may have a lamp always before me in Jerusalem" (11:36), and said, "but not forever" (11:39).
The verse to carry
“When Solomon was old, his wives turned away his heart after other gods; and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God, as the heart of David his father was.”
1 Kings 11:4
To talk about
1. It was "when Solomon was old" that "his wives turned away his heart after other gods" (11:4). What small, slow turns could pull your heart away over years, and who in your life would notice?
2. "Solomon loved the LORD" (3:3), and later "King Solomon loved many foreign women" (11:1). What do you love that could quietly compete with your love for God?
3. In the same speech the LORD says "I will surely tear the kingdom from you" and "I will give one tribe to your son, for David my servant’s sake" (11:11-13). How does it change the way you see God's discipline that he held something back, for David's sake?
