1 Corinthians 4: Stewards of God’s mysteries

Read 1 Corinthians 4:1-21 before you meet.

In a few lines

1 Corinthians 4 says, "So let a man think of us as Christ’s servants and stewards of God’s mysteries." (4:1), and says what is required of stewards: "that they be found faithful" (4:2). It uses the same word for Timothy, "my beloved and faithful child in the Lord" (4:17). And it asks, "what do you have that you didn’t receive?" (4:7).

The verse to carry

“For who makes you different? And what do you have that you didn’t receive? But if you did receive it, why do you boast as if you had not received it?”

1 Corinthians 4:7

To talk about

  1. 1. "that none of you be puffed up against one another" (4:6). When are you most tempted to be puffed up against someone else, and what helps you?

  2. 2. "And what do you have that you didn’t receive?" (4:7). Name one thing you have that you received. Does seeing it as received change how you speak about it?

  3. 3. "I beg you therefore, be imitators of me." (4:16). Whose way of following Christ has helped you most, and what did you learn from watching it?
