1 Chronicles 3: Son after son
Read 1 Chronicles 3:1-24 before you meet.
In a few lines
1 Chronicles 3 doesn't stop at the captive king. After "Jeconiah, the captive" (3:17) it keeps naming David's line, through Zerubbabel (3:19) to the sons of Elioenai (3:24). Matthew's list of Jesus' ancestors names Jechoniah, Shealtiel and Zerubbabel too (Matthew 1:12), and runs on from "Zerubbabel became the father of Abiud" (Matthew 1:13) to Jesus (Matthew 1:16).
The verse to carry
“The sons of Jeconiah, the captive: Shealtiel his son,”
1 Chronicles 3:17
To talk about
1. Kings tells these men's stories, good and bad; this chapter keeps only their names, "his son" after "his son" (3:10-14). What do you most want to hand on to the people who come after you?
2. David's line ran through "Jeconiah, the captive" (3:17) and kept going (3:17-24). When have you seen God keep something going through a time that looked like the end?
3. This chapter and other books give some names differently (3:1, 3:5, 3:19), and the Bible leaves them side by side without explaining. How do you handle it when Scripture leaves a question open?
