1 Chronicles 24: The eighth lot to Abijah
Read 1 Chronicles 24:1-31 before you meet.
In a few lines
The priest Zacharias, John's father, was "of the priestly division of Abijah" (Luke 1:5), and in 1 Chronicles 24 the lots drawn in David's day give "the eighth to Abijah" (24:10). Luke doesn't name Chronicles, but the name is there.
The verse to carry
“This was their ordering in their service, to come into the LORD’s house according to the ordinance given to them by Aaron their father, as the LORD, the God of Israel, had commanded him.”
1 Chronicles 24:19
To talk about
1. The lots were drawn "the fathers’ households of the chief even as those of his younger brother" (24:31). Where is it hardest for you to treat the important and the unimportant alike?
2. Zacharias was serving "in the order of his division" (Luke 1:8), an ordinary turn of duty, when the angel came (Luke 1:11). What ordinary, regular faithfulness is yours right now?
3. Shemaiah wrote the names down "in the presence of the king, the princes" and the heads of the households (24:6). Why does it matter that some things are done in the open, where everyone can see?
