1 Chronicles 21: Back into its sheath
Read 1 Chronicles 21:1-30 before you meet.
In a few lines
David counted the "men who drew a sword" (21:5), and then saw the LORD's angel with "a drawn sword" (21:16): in Hebrew, the same verb and the same noun. And "for the full price" (21:22, 21:24) is, in Hebrew, what Abraham said for the cave of Machpelah (Genesis 23:9), the only other place those two words come together.
The verse to carry
“King David said to Ornan, “No, but I will most certainly buy it for the full price. For I will not take that which is yours for the LORD, nor offer a burnt offering that costs me nothing.””
1 Chronicles 21:24
To talk about
1. Joab went, though "the king’s word was abominable to Joab" (21:6). Have you ever gone along with something you thought was wrong? What would you do differently now?
2. David prayed, "Isn’t it I who commanded the people to be counted? It is even I who have sinned" (21:17). What makes it hard to say "it was me" when others are paying for your wrong?
3. David would not "offer a burnt offering that costs me nothing" (21:24). What would it look like this week for your worship or your giving to cost you something?
