1 Chronicles 10: Why Saul died

Read 1 Chronicles 10:1-14 before you meet.

In a few lines

1 Chronicles gives the reason for Saul's death with the same Hebrew noun it used for why Judah went into exile: his "trespass" (10:13) and their "disobedience" (9:1) are both ma'al. And its "he killed him" (10:14) is the same word, in the same form, the book used of Judah's son Er (2:3).

The verse to carry

“and didn’t inquire of the LORD. Therefore he killed him, and turned the kingdom over to David the son of Jesse.”

1 Chronicles 10:14

To talk about

  1. 1. The chapter names what Saul didn't do: he "didn’t inquire of the LORD" (10:14). When life gets hard, what makes it easier to turn somewhere else before turning to God?

  2. 2. By the time the men of Jabesh Gilead heard, the battle was over (10:11), but they brought the bodies of Saul and his sons to Jabesh, buried their bones and fasted seven days (10:12). When something can't be undone, what can still be done well?

  3. 3. The same verse that ends Saul's story begins David's: the LORD "turned the kingdom over to David the son of Jesse" (10:14). Where have you seen an ending become a beginning?
