Matthew 6 explained

In secret

Matthew 6:1-34 · World English Bible

“But seek first God’s Kingdom and his righteousness; and all these things will be given to you as well.”
Matthew 6:33

In short

Jesus says the same thing three times, of giving, praying and fasting: the hypocrites "have received their reward" (6:2, 6:5, 6:16), but "your Father who sees in secret will reward you" (6:4, 6:6). The prayer he gives comes between the second and the third (6:9-13). And his words on prayer and on being anxious give the same reason: your Father knows what you need (6:8, 6:32).

What's really going on

In secret

In the text

Jesus begins, "Be careful that you don’t do your charitable giving before men, to be seen by them, or else you have no reward from your Father who is in heaven" (6:1). Then he says the same thing three times, of giving, praying and fasting. Each time he begins with when you: "when you do merciful deeds" (6:2), "When you pray" (6:5), "when you fast" (6:16). Each time there are the hypocrites, who do it "that they may get glory from men" (6:2) or "that they may be seen by men" (6:5, 6:16), and each time he says, "they have received their reward" (6:2, 6:5, 6:16). And each time he speaks of the Father who sees in secret: "then your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly" (6:4), "and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly" (6:6), and "your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you" (6:18) (tap secret). Here is what almost everyone misses: the prayer Jesus gives, "Pray like this" (6:9), comes between the second and the third. It follows his words on praying (6:5-8), and after it and his words on forgiving (6:14-15) come his words on fasting (6:16-18).

Easily missed

A reward received

Jesus doesn't say the hypocrites go without a reward. Of giving, they do it "that they may get glory from men" (6:2); of praying, "that they may be seen by men" (6:5); of fasting, "that they may be seen by men to be fasting" (6:16). Each time he says, "they have received their reward" (6:2, 6:5, 6:16) (tap reward). Of giving and praying in secret he says, "your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly" (6:4, 6:6), and of fasting, "your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you" (6:18).

Where the Old Testament leads here

May your name be kept holy

Interpretation

Leviticus 22:32leads toMatthew 6:9

The chapter closes, "You shall not profane my holy name, but I will be made holy among the children of Israel" (22:32). Jesus said, "Pray like this", and the prayer begins, "Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy" (Matthew 6:9). Jesus doesn't quote Leviticus 22. What the two share is their subject: God's name treated as holy and not profaned. Setting them side by side is a reading.

The Greek word behind it

κρυπτόςkryptossay kroop-TOS

Strong's: "concealed, i.e. private". Thayer: "hidden, concealed, secret". Jesus says it six times in this chapter, twice in each of three verses. Of giving: "so that your merciful deeds may be in secret, then your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly" (6:4). Of praying: "pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly" (6:6). Of fasting: "by your Father who is in secret; and your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you" (6:18). So the Father is both "in secret" (6:6, 6:18) and the one who "sees in secret" (6:4, 6:6, 6:18). Matthew's Greek has the word seven times (counted in RP2018, the Byzantine text the WEB translates); the seventh is "hidden that will not be known" (10:26).

Talk about it

"your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly" (6:6). What helps you pray when no one but your Father sees?
