Joshua 6 Bible study: The wall fell down flat

The LORD said "I have given Jericho into your hand" (6:2) before anyone marched a step, and for six days Israel walked around the city, told not to say a word (6:10). The wall fell just as he had said it would (6:5, 6:20). And Joshua's oath over the city came to pass in Ahab's day, "according to the LORD’s word, which he spoke by Joshua" (1 Kings 16:34).

What's really going on

Given before the first step

In the text

Jericho was closed: "Now Jericho was tightly shut up because of the children of Israel. No one went out, and no one came in" (6:1) (tap shut up). By Jericho, Joshua had just met one who said, "I have come now as commander of the LORD’s army" (5:14), and had taken off his sandals as he was told (5:15). Then the LORD said to Joshua, "Behold, I have given Jericho into your hand, with its king and the mighty men of valor" (6:2). He says it before anyone has marched a single step. Rahab had said it to the spies: "I know that the LORD has given you the land" (2:9). On the seventh day Joshua says it again: "Shout, for the LORD has given you the city!" (6:16). And the LORD will say it of the next city: "Behold, I have given into your hand the king of Ai" (8:1).

Where it leads to Jesus

By faith the walls fell

In the text

Joshua 6:20leads toHebrews 12:2

"The people shouted with a great shout, and the wall fell down flat" (6:20), after Israel had marched around the city once a day for six days and seven times on the seventh (6:14-15). Hebrews names it among the acts of faith: "By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after they had been encircled for seven days" (Hebrews 11:30). It says of all in that list that they "didn’t receive the promise" (Hebrews 11:39), and calls its readers to run "looking to Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith" (Hebrews 12:2).

The Hebrew word behind it

חֵרֶםcheremsay KHE-rem

Brown-Driver-Briggs: "devoted thing", and "devotion, ban". Strong's: "usually a doomed object". It is the noun of the verb charam (tap utterly destroyed). "The city shall be devoted, even it and all that is in it, to the LORD" (6:17). In the next verse it comes three times: "what is devoted to destruction", "the devoted thing", and "make the camp of Israel accursed" (6:18), where accursed is the same word: the camp itself would become devoted. Moses had warned of it: "You shall not bring an abomination into your house and become a devoted thing like it" (Deuteronomy 7:26). In the next chapter it happens: "they have become devoted for destruction" (7:12). The law says, "Everything that is permanently devoted is most holy to the LORD" (Leviticus 27:28).

Joshua 6 Bible study questions

  1. 1For six days Israel walked around the city once and went back to camp (6:14), and the wall didn't fall until the seventh day (6:20). What helps you keep doing what God has asked when you can't yet see anything happening?
  2. 2Rahab was brought out of Jericho, and she came to live "in the middle of Israel" (6:25). What would it look like for your group to make room in the middle for someone new?
  3. 3Nothing in Jericho was Israel's to keep: the city was devoted to the LORD, and its metals were "holy to the LORD" (6:17-19). What is hardest for you to hand over to God completely, without keeping a little back?
