Genesis 6 Bible study: Noah found favor

The first heart the Bible mentions is full of evil, and the second is God's, grieving. God will end a world people had already ruined, but first he promises his covenant, the Bible's first use of the word, to Noah, who found favor in his eyes.

Favor is a Bible study app that explains every chapter as you read: the words behind the words, what most readers miss, and how it all leads to Jesus.

What's really going on

What God sees now

In the text

At the end of the first week, "God saw everything that he had made, and, behold, it was very good" (1:31). Now the same verb returns: "The LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth" (6:5), and "God saw the earth, and saw that it was corrupt" (6:12). What God sees has changed, because of what people have done.

Where it leads to Jesus

As the days of Noah were

In the text

Genesis 6:13leads toMatthew 24:37-39

Jesus says, "As the days of Noah were, so will the coming of the Son of Man be." People went on eating, drinking and marrying "until the day that Noah entered into the ship", and didn't know until the flood came.

The Hebrew word behind it

תֵּבָהtevahsay tay-VAH

Ark, a chest or box (Brown-Driver-Briggs: "ark (prop. chest, box)"). The WEB translates it "ship". Outside Genesis 6-9 it appears only in Exodus 2:3 and 2:5, for the basket in which baby Moses was laid in the river. Genesis mentions no sail or rudder: God gives Noah the plans, and "the LORD shut him in" (7:16).

Genesis 6 Bible study questions

  1. 1Before God speaks of the flood, the text says he grieved in his heart. How does it change things to know God grieves, not only judges?
  2. 2Noah did all that God commanded, before any rain fell. What makes it hard to obey when you can't yet see why?
  3. 3"They saw… and they took any that they wanted." Where does our culture tell you to take whatever looks good?
