Exodus 12 Bible study: When I see the blood

The Passover made the month Israel left Egypt the first month of the year (12:2). The blood on the door was a sign for Israel, and the LORD passed over every house where he saw it (12:13). No angel of death is named: the LORD struck, and the destroyer was kept from the marked doors (12:23). Paul says, "Christ, our Passover, has been sacrificed in our place" (1 Corinthians 5:7).

What's really going on

The year starts over

In the text

Before any instruction about the lamb, the LORD changes the calendar: "This month shall be to you the beginning of months. It shall be the first month of the year to you" (12:2). The month Israel comes out of Egypt becomes the month every year is counted from. Later Moses names it: "Today you go out in the month Abib" (13:4), and "Observe the month of Abib, and keep the Passover to the LORD your God; for in the month of Abib the LORD your God brought you out of Egypt by night" (Deuteronomy 16:1).

Where it leads to Jesus

Christ, our Passover

In the text

Exodus 12:21leads to1 Corinthians 5:7

Moses tells Israel's elders, "take lambs according to your families, and kill the Passover" (12:21), and for seven days no yeast is to be found in their houses (12:19). Paul writes, "Purge out the old yeast, that you may be a new lump, even as you are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, has been sacrificed in our place" (1 Corinthians 5:7), and "Therefore let’s keep the feast… with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth" (1 Corinthians 5:8).

The Hebrew word behind it

פֶּסַחpesachsay PE-sakh

Brown-Driver-Briggs gives "sacrifice of passover", "the animal victim of the passover" and "festival of the passover", and Strong's traces it to the verb pasach (H6452), "pass over". This chapter uses it for the animal, "kill the Passover" (12:21), and for the observance as a whole: "This is the ordinance of the Passover" (12:43), which a stranger who joins Israel may "keep" (12:48). Exodus 12:11 is the word's first appearance in the Hebrew Bible, and five of its six uses in Exodus are in this chapter (12:11, 12:21, 12:27, 12:43, 12:48; the sixth is 34:25). In the New Testament Paul writes, "Christ, our Passover, has been sacrificed in our place" (1 Corinthians 5:7).
