2 Chronicles 8 Bible study: So the house was completed

"So the LORD’s house was completed" (8:16) uses the word 2 Chronicles also uses for a heart "perfect toward him" (16:9). And Solomon built "storage cities" (8:4), as Israel once built "storage cities for Pharaoh" (Exodus 1:11), but "of the children of Israel, Solomon made no servants for his work" (8:9).

What's really going on

Twenty years, and the house completed

In the text

The chapter opens "At the end of twenty years, in which Solomon had built the LORD’s house and his own house" (8:1), and it closes the building: "Now all the work of Solomon was accomplished from the day of the foundation of the LORD’s house until it was finished. So the LORD’s house was completed" (8:16) (tap accomplished, finished and completed). In between, Solomon builds cities: "the cities which Huram had given to Solomon" (8:2), "Tadmor in the wilderness" (8:4), "Beth Horon the upper and Beth Horon the lower, fortified cities with walls, gates, and bars" (8:5), and "all that Solomon desired to build for his pleasure in Jerusalem, in Lebanon, and in all the land of his dominion" (8:6). The chapter's one battle is a single line: "Solomon went to Hamath Zobah, and prevailed against it" (8:3). The house was begun "in the second day of the second month, in the fourth year of his reign" (3:2), and chapter 7 said, "Thus Solomon finished the LORD’s house and the king’s house" (7:11). In Hebrew, finished in 7:11 and in 8:16 is the same verb. 1 Kings, after Solomon's offerings, puts it in fewer words: "So he finished the house" (1 Kings 9:25).

The Hebrew word behind it

שָׁלֵםshalemsay sha-LEIM

Brown-Driver-Briggs: "complete, safe, at peace". Strong's: "complete (literally or figuratively)". "So the LORD’s house was completed" (8:16): completed is this word, an adjective, the house complete. 2 Chronicles uses it five times, and the other four describe a heart: "the heart of Asa was perfect all his days" (15:17), "them whose heart is perfect toward him" (16:9), "with a perfect heart" (19:9), and of Amaziah, "but not with a perfect heart" (25:2). 1 Kings closes the same years with "So he finished the house" (1 Kings 9:25), where finished is shillam, from the verb Strong's gives as this word's root ("from 7999").
