2 Chronicles 3 Bible study: On Mount Moriah

The house was begun on the threshing floor where the LORD answered David (3:1), and Chronicles tells what 1 Kings 6 doesn't: two cherubim whose "faces were toward the house" (3:13), and a veil of blue, purple, crimson and fine linen with cherubim (3:14), called by the tabernacle veil's own Hebrew word.

What's really going on

The place, and what happened there

In the text

"Then Solomon began to build the LORD’s house at Jerusalem on Mount Moriah, where the LORD appeared to David his father, which he prepared in the place that David had appointed, on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite" (3:1). One verse names the place again and again: a city, a mountain, what the LORD did there, and whose threshing floor it was (tap threshing floor). 1 Chronicles 21 tells what happened there. David "saw the LORD’s angel standing between earth and the sky, having a drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem" (1 Chronicles 21:16). He "gave to Ornan six hundred shekels of gold by weight for the place" (1 Chronicles 21:25), and the LORD "answered him from the sky by fire on the altar of burnt offering" (1 Chronicles 21:26). Then David said, "This is the house of the LORD God, and this is the altar of burnt offering for Israel" (1 Chronicles 22:1). Now the house is begun there. The verb in "which he prepared" (3:1) is kun, the verb of David's getting ready: "So David prepared abundantly before his death" (1 Chronicles 22:5) (tap prepared).

The Hebrew word behind it

פָּרֹכֶתparokhetsay pa-RO-khet

Brown-Driver-Briggs: "curtain, before Most Holy Place", and it adds "that which habitually shuts off". Strong's: "(the sacred) screen". "He made the veil of blue, purple, crimson, and fine linen, and ornamented it with cherubim" (3:14). The Hebrew Bible uses the word 25 times. Twenty-four are in Exodus, Leviticus and Numbers, of the tabernacle's veil, first in "You shall make a veil of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen, with cherubim" (Exodus 26:31). This verse is the only other one. 1 Kings doesn't use the word.

  1. 1Solomon built the LORD's house "on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite" (3:1), where the LORD had answered David by fire (1 Chronicles 21:26). What has God answered in your life that you would want to build on?
  2. 2"He decorated the house with precious stones for beauty" (3:6). What place does beauty have in the way you worship God?
  3. 3Solomon made a veil with cherubim (3:14), like the tabernacle's veil that separated "the holy place from the most holy" (Exodus 26:33). Hebrews speaks of "boldness to enter" (Hebrews 10:19). How do you come to God: boldly, carefully, or not at all lately?
