2 Chronicles 14 Bible study: No one besides you to help

Asa's word for leaning on God, "we rely on you" (14:11), is the word Hanani later turns on him: "Because you have relied on the king of Syria, and have not relied on the LORD your God" (16:7). And his prayer ends not "against us" but "Don’t let man prevail against you" (14:11).

“Asa cried to the LORD his God, and said, “LORD, there is no one besides you to help, between the mighty and him who has no strength. Help us, LORD our God; for we rely on you, and in your name we have come against this multitude. LORD, you are our God. Don’t let man prevail against you.””

What's really going on

Quiet, rest, and the reason given

In the text

Asa's reign opens with a word the chapter says three times: "In his days, the land was quiet ten years" (14:1), "the kingdom was quiet before him" (14:5), and "the land was quiet, and he had no war in those years, because the LORD had given him rest" (14:6) (tap quiet and rest). In between, Asa "did that which was good and right in the LORD his God’s eyes" (14:2). He "took away the foreign altars and the high places, broke down the pillars, cut down the Asherah poles" (14:3), and "commanded Judah to seek the LORD, the God of their fathers, and to obey his law and command" (14:4). Then Asa himself names the reason for the rest: "The land is yet before us, because we have sought the LORD our God. We have sought him, and he has given us rest on every side" (14:7). In Hebrew, seek in 14:4 and both soughts in 14:7 are one verb, darash (tap seek). The quiet years aren't idle: "Let’s build these cities and make walls around them, with towers, gates, and bars" (14:7). "So they built and prospered" (14:7).

The Hebrew word behind it

שָׁעַןsha'ansay sha-AN

Brown-Driver-Briggs: "lean, support oneself". Strong's: "to support one's self". "Help us, LORD our God; for we rely on you" (14:11). 2 Chronicles uses the verb five times, all in the telling of Abijah and Asa. Judah prevailed "because they relied on the LORD, the God of their fathers" (13:18). Then Asa, here. Later Hanani the seer says it to Asa three times over: "Because you have relied on the king of Syria, and have not relied on the LORD your God" (16:7), and of Zerah's army, "Yet, because you relied on the LORD, he delivered them into your hand" (16:8). Isaiah uses it of those who "rely on horses" and "don’t seek the LORD" (Isaiah 31:1), where seek is darash, this chapter's word for seeking.

2 Chronicles 14 Bible study questions

  1. 1Asa used the quiet years to seek the LORD and to build (14:4-7). If you are in a quieter season now, what would it look like to use it the way he did?
  2. 2"There is no one besides you to help, between the mighty and him who has no strength" (14:11). Where do you need help right now that you can't give yourself, and what would it mean to pray Asa's prayer there?
  3. 3Asa ended, "Don’t let man prevail against you" (14:11), not "against us". What would change in something you're facing if you brought it to God that way?
